A few years ago I was visiting the vast Gray Ranch over in the Animas Valley and was told about a saloon there near San Luis Pass that served as a school in the morning after settlers started coming into the country. I loved the idea and wrote a novella about what might have happened. THE SCHOOL AT BUCKET OF BLOOD (really the saloon’s name!) is included in TALES OF THE AMERICAN WEST, edited by Richard Wheeler and published by New American Library . If you like Western short stories, you’ll enjoy this collection by Spur Award-winning authors. Available from your bookstore or Amazon.com.

One of my vintage and most favorite short stories is in NO PLACE FOR A LADY from Five Star, edited by Vicki Piekarski. BROTHER SHOTGUN is about an old buffalo hunter whose return to the plains after the Civil War keeps being delayed by the needs of a young woman who has taken in a number of orphans. This is Oscar Wilde’s THE HAPPY PRINCE in a Western setting. Available from your bookstore or Amazon.com.

Here are a few photos of my pets and where I live.
